There are so many names for police in Hong Kong; if who stationed at the Hong Kong Island, the colleagues will call you as “a policeman”. At the Kowloon Peninsula, the partners will call you as “a police station man”. At the New Territories, everyone will give you an appellation as “a security man.”

From “a policeman” to “a police station man”, and then being called as “a security man “, the images were getting sketchy and worse.

Actually, in 80s of last century, the establishment of ICAC was the most important factor to change the images of the Royal Hong Kong Police, and let it had been greatly improved. The Hong Kong Government had made the decision deliberately to create a good image of police, went to enact the writ of amnesty about who had committed a crime of corruption, but also given a significant raising of salary in a very short period of time, and then went to change the uniform of the Royal Hong Kong Police to wear trousers, all these measures were the consequence of the conflict between Royal Hong Kong Police and ICAC.

In generally who had being selected came into PTS in 1980s, his lowest academic requirement must be graduated from F5 of secondary school; but who entered into PTS through the way of the Police Cadet School, that would not in this limit.

At that time, the police students needed to attend the examination once every two weeks; that was answering in the multiple-choice questions. The contents of the questions were mainly around the law of Hong Kong and the Ordinance of Police, and these were including a lot of the questions about the nature of story; to ask questions in the form of a story, and go to see, is it any offense has been happened?

So, even if the police students how to carefully study the Law of Hong Kong and the Ordinance of Police, when they are looking at these story form questions, there will be got some murky feelings about what are the meanings of the questions!

Fortunately, we won’t need worried. In that time, “the Secret Book” had been circulated into the student lockers of the different class; it was not required to pay any donation to express sincerity in exchange for the questions of examination. This was an unlisted secret, everyone in the PTS had known, but nobody would say they knew that.

The answers of these questions of the examination were the assets which collected from the different students, who came from the different courses and the different classes, who in immediately written down from his recalled after the examination.

The instructors of each class assembly the contents of secret book through the sources on the variety channels, and assign them to their students secretly.

The each standard answers of “the Secret Book” were the outcome of detailed discussion and consulted the relevant ordinance at an immediately recalled after a lot of test by the different instructors and different students.

In sometimes, that would be appeared some problems in these discussions.

Because when the same story form question emerged in an another text, students according to the outcome of discussion answered the question, but the result of the test revealed who had followed the standard answer to answer the question, their score was reduced. However, who didn’t follow the answer which had been discussed, their score were increased.

That means the standard answer after discussion was not true, a corrective action required.

These discussion and correction after several times revisions, let it became to the legend of” the Secret Book”. So, every night, in self-study time, almost all of the police students must diligent reading “the Secret Book” while they were hard studying the Law of Hong Kong.

“The Secret Book” is the sacred object which can not be being known publicly.

Therefore, every time at the day of inspection, all of the illegality goods which were being stored in the locker of students must be evacuated, and temporarily kept in the office of the instructors. These were included self-purchased cleaning products, an excess clothes and quilts, radio and puzzle reading (adult magazine).

So, in the 80s of last century, the Royal Hong Kong Police Training School was totally filled with an atmosphere of reading, no matter what kind of books to read, we are all enjoyed it.

      香港對警察的稱乎有幾種；如果是駐守在香港島的，同僚會稱呼“警察”。在九龍半島駐守，會稱呼“差人”。在新界和離島駐守，會被冠以“打更佬”的稱呼！

從“警察”到“差人”再到“打更佬”，形象愈來愈“粗魯”。

其實，在上世紀八十年代，皇家香港警察的象形已經大大改善了很多;當中原因，「廉政公署」的成立，是最重大的關鍵。在“警廉衝突”之後，政府決心改善“差人”的形象，頒布特赦令對從前犯下貪污罪行的全港“差人”既往不究，又大幅度加薪，軍裝差人的執勤制服改穿長褲，刻意打造出一個新的“警察”形象。

從八十年代開始，一般被挑選進入警校的學員，最低的學歷要求都需要中學五年級畢業；從少年警察訓練學校途徑進入警校的學警就不受這規例限制。

     那時候的學警，需要每二星期接受一次考試，是以多項選擇題的方式作答。題目以香港法例和警察條例為主，但是當中卻包含了很多故事題。以故事方式來發問有否干犯任何法例。
         所以，就算學警如何的用心熟讀香港法律和警隊條例，當看到這些故事題的時候，都會有似是如非的感覺！
          但是，大家可以放心，那個時候已經不再需要以獻金方式來表示誠意換取考試題目，亦已經出現了不同版本的《天書》流傳在各班學警的私人儲物櫃內！這是不公開的秘密，全校上上下下都知道，但又沒有人會說自己知道！
            這些考試題目，是結集了不同學期、不同班別、不同學警的“考試後即時回憶”寫下來的資產。每一班別的正副班主任都會透過各種渠道集結成書，不公開的分發給自己班別的學員。這些《天書》的每題標準答案，都是由不同的班主任和不同的學警在無數次的考試結束之後，在記憶尤新的時候詳細討論與查閱有關法例條文之後所得出的結論！
           有時候，這些討論結果會出現問題。因為當下一次出現同一條故事題的時候，學警以討論所得的答案填寫選擇題，但成績出來的結果，發覺所有依照討論答案作答的學員分數都同樣減少了，而沒有依照討論答案作答的學員分數卻有所增加！這就表示了討論的答案有問題，需要作出更正。
          這樣的討論和更改，經過多次的修訂之後，便成為了傳說中的《天書》
           所以，每天晚上的學警自修時間，大多數學員都會一邊溫習香港法例和警察條例，一邊熟讀《天書》。
          《天書》始終都是不能公諸於世的傳說聖物。所以每次大查房的日子，正副班主任都會把學員儲物櫃內的所有違禁品收藏在教官宿舍內！當中包括所有自購的清潔用品、過多的被子和衣物、收音機和益智讀物(成人雜誌)。

       所以，上世紀八十年代的皇家香港警察訓練學校，全校上上下下都是彌漫著一片讀書的風氣，不論是閱讀何種書籍，大家都樂在其中！

When you curse someone didn’t give any help but reversely giving you some troubles, you would say: “Don’t get in the way on my business.” In Chinese “Please don’t left hand left leg.”

Do you know why scolding someone “Please don’t left had left leg…”rather than others.

In 1980’s, the junior police students were starting from the basic step with unarmed in the parade of Police Training School. To two months later, they will be assigned a rifle with bayonet which hadn’t been fired shots; at this stage, the police students will need to learn a series of steps of rifle drills.

“You must be walking steady usually, before to start running on the road.”

This principle is very appropriate using on the march.

All of the instructors for marching training are male, and the students need to learn the stand attention position as the first step in PTS, but almost all the teenage of Hong Kong have had a back bending problem, this problem must need to solve in PTS. Actually, because of the back had already bended, so that couldn’t to fix that immediately, it always to reveal the old problem in not aware case.

The good instructor will have always alerted students must be the chest up. (So many instructors like to teach the marching course of the female class.)

The bad instructor would be gave you a punch on you back without any warning.

If the students being trained in winter, they will be wearing the long-sleeved sweater, it doesn’t matter even if have a little back bending.

But in summer, the male students are not wearing the T-shirt, if so appeared “back bending” in marching, it doesn’t look good.  Even more can not “back bending” if the shoulder is holding a rifle . So that, the general instructor will be spent more time to correct the basic stand attention position of students, always reminded students to feel the center line of the body, posture must be straight as they felt their center line of the body.

The instructor demanded the students must have the sense of rhythm. It must be stiffed, and doesn’t look good if the marching without any sense of rhythm.

Initially, the whole squad can call out the steps of marching and accepted by the instructor, so, if you heard the whole squad call out the steps of marching passing from your side, this squad must the new one.

From stand attention position to start marching, the steps are starting form left leg, therefore, the whole new squad will always call out “left… left…left, right, left”. Left leg step forward and right hand straighten at balanced to the shoulder, fingers up and seized the fist; left hand put behind at 45 degrees

When the steps were wrong, someone wanted to correct the steps but influenced by another one as the students of the squad didn’t match to each others, it would be happened the left hand and left leg moved forward at the same time.

This is the “left hand left leg”.

You can try to walk with the left hand left leg at the same time at home, that you will know how ugly you have done, and you have never seen it before.

It was the disaster as the “left hand left leg” happened in the playground that must be attracted all kinds of “Yan Chi Ching” from the all directions.

Consequently, the instructors will be prevented their junior students entered into the playground, let them to practice at the small playground for several weeks, and then will leading them marching into the “Holy land” to feel the echo effect of the PTS until to make sure the students have strong enough facing the pressure.

當你去罵人做事幫不了忙，反倒過來妨礙其他人的時候，會罵他：「不要左手左腳！」

知不知道為何會罵：「不要左手左腳呢？」

一九八零年代，在警察訓練學校的步操，初級學警是先從基本的徒手步操開始。到了兩個月之後，便會分配到一支不能發射但配有刺刀的步槍；到了這個階段的學警便要學習一系的步槍操練步法。

“未學跑步之前，平時行路一定要平穩。”

這個道理應用在步操上十分恰當！

學堂負責教導學員步操的全都是男性教官。學警第一個要學習的動作，就是立正。香港青少年，大多數都有曲背的問題，這個問題來到學堂便要糾正。因為習慣了曲背，所以並不是要改正便可以改正，通常都會在不自覺的情況下出現老毛病。好的教官，會經常大聲提醒學員要“挺胸收腹”。(故此，有很多教官都想教導女學警步操！)

不好的教官，便會在毫無提示的情況下在你背部給你一記老拳！如果在冬季日子受訓，身上穿上了長袖毛衣，就算真的有少許曲背，問題也不大。但是在夏天，男學警都是不穿上衣，若然步操的時候曲背，就不好看！
如果是肩托著步槍，就更不可以曲背！所以，一般教官都會花很多時間去糾正學員的基本站立姿勢，經常會提醒學員要感覺到自己身上的「中線」，當感覺到身上的「中線」，姿勢必定畢直。
              教官在學員接受步操之前，都會要求學員要有節拍感覺，沒有節拍感覺的步操絕對是“生硬”的！不會好看！最初，教官會容許整個步操行列一同在口中叫出步法，所以當你聽到一整個步操行列的人都同時叫出步法口號的時候，這一個行列必定是新丁！
              從立正到起動，步法是由“左”開始，所以新丁都會一直叫著“LEFT”……“LEFT”……“LEFT”“RIGHT”“LEFT”，左腳踏前便右手伸直提起到肩頭平衡，手指頭向上合實拳頭，左手擺後45度。
    當步法錯了，行列中的學員互相不配合，有人想糾正自己的步法但又被其他人影響，便會出現在左腳踏前的時候同時伸出了左手，這就是“左手左腳”，你可以試試以“左手左腳”在家中走幾步，看看會有多麼難看！
    在大操場上出現“左手左腳”,絕對是大災難！必定會招徠從四方八面送來的“三字經”！

    所以，教官通常都會避免讓初班學警進入大操場，要新丁在小操場的某個角落苦練數週，認為有把握的時候，才會帶領新丁操入大操場，讓學員感受大操場的回音氣勢！

"Yan Tsz Ching " (三字經) is the classical Chinese reading, but it also means foul language in twenty-century Chinese society, because almost all the Chinese foul language is composed by three single word that is as like as the instruction of “Yan Tsz Ching” by three single word. If you want to be used smoothly in foul language (Yan Tsz Hing), that must need to be learnt diligently. Let them to make a suddenly shocked the people, it must need to more listens, speaks, practices and used with emotions and sounds in the different kinds of occasions.

When I was a child, my father was a guy who loved stand by Male-dominated the family, although he didn’t have any educated, but in my memories he had never been spoken foul languages in the faces of the family; he had just only to speak some Chinese adverb, not the foul language for the most exciting times. For example: in any case I will(“老虎蟹都要…！”).

My mother had never been a formally education, but she can read and write; she doesn’t allowed her children speaking foul languages at home since I was born. As I was brought up in this background, it let an eighteen years old teenage boy to create some foul language from his mind to suit to use by himself while he lives in the Police Training School, and have to listen different kinds of foul language from all directions comes into the ears from the beginning of sunshine.

The two instructors of Q class have abilities changed their speaking channel. They had never been spoken foul language in class and hostel, just only to perform a little stern attitude treating their students in public places.

The aim of the performance of speaking foul language at public place, is preventing the others instructors come to do something about “none of your business”, and trying to protect their students stay away from the troubles.

In my memory, once in the playground while parade with other students of same course, a classmate who standing beside me, he was suddenly lost in space, the reaction was too slow about the orders by the parade in charge officer, and because of its was the parade of eighty students, it was very striking as one student in the parade of eighty students didn’t following the beat; there was a dangerous situation waiting for me as the poor guy who standing beside me became to a target and attracting the eyes of all instructors.

When the attack by “Yan Tsz Ching” from the all directions coming into the playground, the echo of effect with the time equation made them became a voice of ghost: “ you…you…you…are…are…are…the…the…the…son…son…son…of…of…”; at this critical time, the vice-class instructor of Q class was the first running to in front of my classmate, and said softly “attention...this is the shows...” during many of the instructors who had developed muscles with angry eyes hastily approaching in front of my classmate. And then the vice-class instructor changed his facial expression became to a wolf’s face, used his hands pushed the chest of my classmate, so that it lets my classmate moving backward; and a matching attitudes and sounds of “Yan Tsz Ching” with the series of action coming from the mouth of vice-instructor to extend greetings to the whole family of my classmate.

The actors were succeed in showing their abilities; the instructors who expected to come to give a punishment to the slow-moving classmate were stopped their foot, and enjoying the show during the vice-instructor showing evil expression to his student.

Perhaps, the reasons of the called curse from the instructors to the students were let the students who came from the normally family trying to learn how to accept an unfriendly circumstance; first of all to know how to react as encounter someone to treat them in awful, before they have abilities to treat someone with “foul language”.

Finally, I have known to need to change the channel in the different situations, and already have abilities to concentrate the three words “Yan Tsz Ching” into one word, under the intensive training of how to use “Yan Tsz Ching”.

“三字經”是要用心學習才可以應用自如。要多聽、多講、多練習，才可以恰切地在不同的場合配合不同的“三字經”融合感情和聲線對目標物造成剎那間的震撼！

    小時候，父親是一個大男人，沒有受過教育，但是在自己的印象當中，他沒有在家人面前說“三字經”，最激動的時候，也只不過說出一些“助語詞”不算是“三字經”。例如：“老虎蟹都要…！”

     媽媽雖然並沒有正式讀過書，但也會讀書寫字，自小家中都不容許孩子說“三字經”。在這種生活背景之下，一位十八歲的小朋友在警察學堂中的生活，每天從太陽升起開始，便不斷聽到各式其式的“三字經”從四方八面走進耳朵裡，不自覺便會在腦海中自行創造出適合自己運用的“三字經”！
       當時Q班的正副班主任都是懂得“轉台”的警務人員。在課室和宿舍內不會“爆粗”，只會在公眾場合，對外人稍稍表演一下自己是如何嚴厲的對待學員。
       這種在公眾地方的“爆粗”表演，目的就是在緊急的關頭，避免其他教官多管閒事，不讓自己的學員受到外人的(問候)。
        記憶中，有一次在大操場上同期男學警會操訓練的時候，站在自己身邊的同學，突然間“迷失太空”，對負責這次會操的教官“口令”反應過慢；因為是接近八十人的會操，某一位學警的遲鈍動作在八十人襯托之下特別顯眼；身邊同學的“迷失太空”頓時成為了眾教官的焦點，站在他身邊的自己，也意會到了一種將會“殃及池魚”的感覺！
       當“三字經”開始從大操場四方八面罵過來的時候，在空曠地方所造成的回音以不同的時差激盪著：「你…你…你…老…老…老…！」就在這個關鍵的瞬間，多名粗手大腳的教官怒氣沖沖的急步走近同學面前的時候，副班主任便搶先一步走到同學身邊細聲說：「留心…做戲！」
隨後，副班主任立刻在臉上展示出豺狼的面孔，用雙手推撞同學的胸口，讓同學不停的後退，這套動作當然是配合語氣相若的“三字經”來(問候)同學的全家上下！

    這個小小的戲份成功了，本來打算要教訓這名動作遲鈍同學的其他教官，看到副班主任神情兇惡的表演，都停下了腳步來慢慢欣賞！

    或者，在學堂內教官對學員的叫罵，就是要讓出身正常家庭的學員去習慣被別人經常(問候)的環境，在未懂得用“三字經”去罵人之前，先行懂得被別人用“三字經”(問候)要如何反應！

    結果，在密集的“三字經”訓練之下，自己亦學懂了在不同的環境需要轉到不同的台號，同時亦把“三字經”濃縮成為“一字經”！

Some one would say that “the life of the Police Training School is discipline and obedience!”

Now, recall this word, just is joking.

Many students would have failed if the discipline and the obedience are the absolutely needs from them to fulfill.

Q class had twenty students from the beginning. Three students resigned in the end of the first month; that was a very high percentage.

In fact, let the students to adapt the world is inequality might be the aims of the life of the Police Training School. Once you have known you are the one of the people who is living in the lowest class of the world, you would be automatically learned how to live in the Unequal World, and to make sure absolutely understanding “the class conception of the police”, using a different levels of respectable attitude to the different kinds of rank of police officers in exchange for survival.

In PTS the trainees are the full pay salary civil servants, so, they have to pay for meal. I have still remembered needed to go to “the judge of hair” to cut the hair for every two weeks, that of course, also needed to pay.

If the trainees have felt the food which provided from the PTS are not enough to fill their stomach, they can goes to the canteen to add calories at the free time in afternoon and in evening. The first popular food of canteen is Hot Dog with one sausage; the second one is instant noodles(出前一丁). At that time, I was not understanding how to cook a bowl of noodles(出前一丁), because there was not open flame cooking in canteen

In legend, there was a genius, he observed a huge electric water heater in canteen; so, he brought a stainless steel container by himself, and purchased a lot of instant noodles(出前一丁). Everyday at the free times, came into canteen with his stainless steel container and instant noodles(出前一丁), he put the adamant noodles into the stainless steel container, and added hot water to cook for two minutes, afterward, discard the water which in the container, then, refill the fresh hot water to cook the noodles for two minutes, repeat the action for several times, until the sixth times after refill the fresh hot water, can be adding the seasonings to eat.

When the boss of the canteen looked at the demonstration by the genius, he discovered that would be an opportunity for business. So, he went to purchase plenty of instant noodles(出前一丁), and planned to make profits for each pack of noodles more than one dollar sold to the trainees.

At that time, the trainee canteen had had a twenty-four inches television; it would be turned on at the free time, so, that would aggregated a dozens of trainees in front of the TV at the free time. During that time, was broadcasting the programme “I Q doctor” before the 6:30 pm news report; that was the favourite TV programme for the trainees.

By noon on Saturday was starting of the weekly holidays. Everyone would went out for weekly holidays until the Sunday night returned to PTS, if not on duty patrol in PTS or have gotten a punishment from instructor.

Because of the holidays are too short, almost all the trainees would chosen taxi for the transportation to get in or out from PTS. Usually, the Admiralty MTR Station is the assembly place for the trainees to compose five people taxi-tours.

回憶中的警察故事 6 並不是所有學警都適應警校生活

有人會說警察訓練學校的生活是要紀律、服從！

現在回想，說笑吧！

如果，真的以要求絕對的紀律和服從作為警校生活的重點，很多人都會支持不下去。Q班本來有二十名學員，在第一個月便有三名學警提出退學，百分比十分高！

其實，在學堂的生活，可能就是要求每一名學員去習慣這個世界是不平等的！當你知道自己是在這個世界中身份最低下的階層，便會自動去學習如何在這個不平等的世界生存下去，清楚認識警察的階級觀念，對不同的階級給與不同的表面敬意就是最恰當的生存之道。

    受訓的學警，是支取全薪的公務員，所以在學堂內的日常膳食便要付錢。還記得每兩星期要到警校(髮官)剪頭髮一次，當然也要付錢的。如果一日三餐的膳食不足夠，學警可以在中午和傍晚的自由活動時間，來到學警餐廳補充熱量。學警餐廳的(單腸熱狗)是最受歡迎的食品，其次就是(出前一丁)。學警餐廳沒有明火煑食，故此，最初自己都不明白如何可以弄好一碗(出前一丁)。
        傳說，有一位天才，看到學警餐廳有一個大型電熱水煲，於是自己便帶備了一個不锈鋼壼回來，還購備了大量(出前一丁)。每天到了自由時間，便帶同不锈鋼壼和(出前一丁)來到學警餐廳，他把硬崩崩的(出前一丁)放入不锈鋼壼內，加入熱水，之後加蓋焗兩分鐘，隨後倒去熱水，再加入新鮮熱水，加蓋再焗兩分鐘，如此重複這套動作五次，到第六次加入熱水之後，便可以混合調味料進食。
       學警餐廳老闆看到這位天才的示範之後，發覺是無限商機，於是便添購了數十個不锈鋼壼，還訂購了大量的(出前一丁)每包賺取一元以上的利潤！
        那時候的學警餐廳有一部二十四吋電視機，每當自由時間都會開啓，所以每逢這個時段都會有數十名或過百名學警圍站在電視機前。當年，在新聞報導之前，是播放《IQ博士》，這是在學警餐廳最受歡迎的節目。

     到了星期六中午，就是每星期的例假開始，如果不是被罰或是剛好需要在警校內負責當值巡邏，所有學警都會放假外出，直到星期天的晚上才返回警校。

     因為假期短暫，所以大多數學員出入警校都是選擇的士作為交通工具，金鐘地鐵站通常都會成為組成五人的士團的集合地點。

The Q class had been assigned to the first floor of the hostel as they came into PTS in first day; before this arrangement, the last class which lived there had been left this hostel for two months ago. Although, wasn’t any scene of horror displayed in front of the eyes, but its have enough problems to the students of Q class to consume their efforts to restore them from the mess, as without any cleaning operation in the hostel for two months ago.

In 1985, all student hostels in PTS were the horizontal four-storey buildings. Every floor had the same building specifications; living room, toilet and storage room had been placed at the right side of the ladder; this storage room will be located the rifles of each student will be assigned for marching in the future.

The teaching room had been placed at the left side of the ladder. The first day move in the hostel, all of the furniture of the teaching room had been being placed at the living room; the living had had a pair of doors with glasses could be locked, and the inside of the living room had been separated by three brick walls let its became to three equally areas, each area had been located two rows of iron beds and wooden lockers ; “18”and the other five students had assigned to the third area (rear room).

            At that time, the basic equipment of the police student had one-pair of marching boots, one-pair of uniform shoes, one police cap, one riot helmet, three-pair of socks, one-pair of wool gloves, two-pair of uniform numbered metal plates, one set of leather belt and chest belt, one leather baton cover, one wooden baton, one set of siren and siren rope, one pistol rope, one leather pistol cover, one leather handcuffs cover, one World War II style of gas mask, three light-green shorts with three short sleeve shirt of PTS uniform, one white cloth with metal buckle belt, (in summer, male student do not wear a shirt, but female student must wear a shirt with a light-green trousers); two dark blue trousers of winter uniform, one dark blue sweater, one wrist strap with uniform number, two set of formal summer uniform of police, one set of formal winter uniform of police, (all the formal uniform of police had had a name of “full dress”, its won’t be wear in ordinary day); one blanket, it used to cover on the iron bed with plank,(in summer, this blanket will still to cover on the iron bed with plank); one set of textbook; an applicable law of the police and an ordinances of police.(its could be used to instead a pair of pillows). Every time as the large inspection, all the personal equipments must be showing on the bed with the official specification of each course, and the every personal equipments must be printed a UI number.

All the students of rear room including me had being appointed to responsible for the duty of cleaning of toilet and bathroom. Once I heard that it let me to have a little despair.

At that time, the toilet and bathroom of the male hostel had had four floor-mount urinals; four independent interval water closet, toilets; four shower rooms; four wash basins, and had one floor-mount water storage heater but it had been broken.

The four floor-mount urinals each one had a copper filter, every time as inspections these copper filters must be polished with luster. So, the vice-class instructor ordered the students used metal polish cream to buff the copper filter, and keep its in secret place; use plastic replacement in ordinary days.

Without any cleaning operation in two months, it must need to contribute much more efforts to let them to be in line with the standard of inspection. Toilet cleaner, thinner, acid and sand power, they were the first choices to against the dirty stain.

The dirty stain cover on the mosaic tiles in toilet and bathroom can be said to achieve the fossil stage; scouring pad and wire brush were useless; be sure to use strong acid. However, Q class was found that no enough strong acid to manage the whole areas of mosaic tiles of toilet and bathroom in the eve of the inspection day. The result was revealed a seriously unequal breaching colour.

The two class instructors have seen these ominous patterns but it was to later to fix it.

In legend, the senior officer who would be in charge of inspection, might be worn a pair of white gloves goes to touch everywhere in the hostel. He will touch the backboard of the classroom, and the inside of the student drawer; he will be swept the glass of windows by his hands.

They are so metamorphosis. That was my first reaction as I heard this legend; and it would be raised with their ranking became higher and higher.

The day of the first inspection was on the second weekend after we came into PTS. We have done our best used the limited sources that we had gotten before dawn. Every corner has thoroughly cleaned by several times. In order to let the glass of windows can be transparent a crystal effect, everyone of Q class goes to risk their lives climbed out of the hostel from the windows to clean the windows, canopies and beams. Using toothbrush goes to clean the ladders, and the mosaic tiles of corridor. Because of the students used shoe shine polish to buff their boots every day, it left a lot of traces of black shoe polish on the floor, it needs to use thinner with scouring pad to brush them out. Using an adhesive tape goes to catch the dust which remains on the floor.

After dawn, finished breakfast, carry out a final preventive inspection when returned to hostel. Everybody have worn the formal summer uniform of police, checking each other’s appearance with each other; moustache and bread have scraped or not; there is not any nose hair came out from nostril. Finally, we used an adhesive tape to clean up dust and dirt which has still been sticking on the uniforms. At that moment, I think I was nearly became sterile stage.

That time, the in charge of inspection was the senior officer; he had a job title CDMI. He was an Englishman, the rank was Chief Inspector, and had fought in Second World War. In legend, he was liked to wear all the metals which received during the war, whenever the inspection many students would be asked what the names of the metals. So, the students of Q class had already been told this additional personal information by the instructors, needed to remember carefully, but also a good recite the pledge of allegiance to the Queen.

In the eve of the first inspection, everything human beings can do has already been done.

The moment of judgment has finally come. No any question about the name of the metals from CDMI asked to the students, but he has asked the students to recite the pledge of allegiance to the Queen, and he has worn a pair of white gloves, but didn’t goes to touch anywhere.

After the inspection, he told the result of the inspection to the accompanying instructors, he especially mentioned to the toilet and bathroom of Q class.

At that time, I had a trembling with fear from the inside of my heart. I didn’t think of a dramatic result will emerge in front of my eyes; unexpectedly we got a appreciation

CDMI told to the accompanying instructors, he didn’t accept the students went to renovation their toilet and bathroom that he had seen before; the request of PTS just keeping the facilities be clean. Although, he has seen the floor of toilet and bathroom of Q class has revealed some different colours by using the bleach, this can let him to know the students of Q class didn’t see the renovation as the goal, but to try to clean to treat this place, this is in line with his principles, so, it’s worthy to have an appreciation.

Q class has escaped a catastrophe.

          對於一個年輕小伙子來說，生活環境的氣氛會直接改變年輕人的價值觀！價值觀一旦改變，往後的生活都會受其影響！

      第一天入住警校宿舍的時候，Q班所分配到的樓層是在一樓。這個樓層距離上一次畢業班別遷出的日子已經有兩個月的時間。兩個月沒有人清潔的宿舍，雖然說不上恐佈，但也有足夠多的問題讓新住客消耗大量心力去復原！

      一九八五年的警校學警宿舍，全都是一字型的四層建築，每一層都是劃一規格，樓梯右邊是宿舍、衛生間和一個儲物室。那個儲物室將來是用作擺放每一位學員所分配到的步操長槍。樓梯的左邊是教室。第一天入住宿舍的時候，教室內的枱椅全都被搬進了宿舍內；宿舍有一度可以上鎖的玻璃木門，內裡以磚牆平均分隔出三個區域，每一個區域都擺放了兩排鐵架床；自己和其他五位學警被分配到第三區域(尾房)。

       那時候的學警基本個人裝備，有步操軍靴一對、軍裝皮鞋一對、警帽一頂、防暴鋼盔一頂、警襪三對、毛冷手套一對、個人金屬編號兩套共四個、一套真皮腰帶和胸帶(俗稱天地線)、一個真皮警棍套、警棍一支(木製)、警笛連警笛繩、警槍套繩、真皮警槍套、真皮手銬套、一個第二次世界大戰時期款式的防毒面具、警校制服淺綠色短褲三條、上衣三件、白色布扣腰帶一條(夏天男學警是不穿上衣的，女學警當然會多穿上一件上穿，配合一條長褲！)、冬天校服長褲兩條、毛衣一件、一個扣上個人編號的手腕帶、兩套夏季的警察制服、一套冬天制服(這些制服在警校內是被稱為大禮服，一般日子是不會穿著的)、一張舖在鐵架木板床上的毛毯(夏天都要把這張毛毯舖在木板床上)、一套適用於警察的法律和警察條例課本(厚度可以當作兩個枕頭)。這些基本個人配備在每一次(大查房)的時候，都要全部以個別班級的劃一規格展示在學警的床舖上。每一樣個人裝備都要用印章蓋上自己的警察編號。
        18分配入住的尾房被安排負責清潔衛生間，知道這毎個消息之後，有點不是味兒！
        當時的男學警衛生間，有四個直立到地的小便廁格和四格獨立間隔的坐廁(應該沒有記錯)、有四格獨立的沐浴間、洗手瓷盤也有四個，還有一個壞掉了的大型坐地式熱水爐。
        四個直立的小便廁格有四個銅造的尿格，每次大查房的時候，這些尿格都要發出金黃色的光澤。所以副班主任便叮囑尾房的學員要收起這四個尿格，使用(擦銅膏)把尿格擦亮，平日便以塑膠代用品取代。
        兩個月沒有清潔的衛生間當然要花上很大的努力才可以符合大查房的要求，所以(潔廁得、天拿水、鏹水、沙粉)便成為了對抗頑劣污積的必然之選。
       當時，衛生間的紙皮石地板上的污積，可以說是達到「化石」階段，百潔布、鋼絲刷已經失去作用，一定要使用強力鏹水。但是當Q班接受第一次的大查房前夕，預備的強力鏹水並不足夠應付整個衛生間的地板。結果，就是出現了不均等的漂白情況，事態十分嚴重！
        正副班主任都看到這種不均等的漂白圖案，但已經沒有時間去補救了！
       傳說，負責大查房的高級教官，是會配帶上白色手套來觸摸學警宿舍的每一個角落！他會觸摸課室黑板和學員使用的書桌抽屜內格，也會用手掃過窗台和玻璃。當時，自己聽到這個傳說的時候，第一個反應，就是感覺到官階越高便越變態！
       那天，是自己進入學堂的第二個星期。同班學員在天亮之前盡了全力和所有可供應用的物資，把舍宿的每一個角落都徹底清潔過多次，為了讓玻璃門窗可以通透晶瑩，全班同學都冒著生命危險爬出一樓建築物外牆，清潔簷篷橫樑和外露窗台；樓梯和走廊的瓷磚與紙皮石便用牙刷逐一擦拭；因為學警的軍靴每天都要使用鞋油擦出光亮，所以宿舍的地板經常都會留下大量黑色鞋油條紋，需要使用天拿水來除抺這些痕跡。使用(牛皮膠紙)捕足飄浮在地上的微塵。

    天亮之後，吃過早餐，回到宿舍進行了最後一次的預防檢查，各人穿好了大禮服之後，互相檢查一下對方的外觀，鬍鬚有沒有剃淨，鼻毛有沒有外露。最後，便用牛皮膠紙互相清除一下身上的塵埃。到了這一刻，自己認為已經近乎達到(無菌)的階段！
       負責這次大查房的高級教官職位簡稱是(CDMI)中文譯名應該是(操場總教官)，是一位打過第二次世界大戰的英國人，當時的職級是總督察。傳說，他喜歡在自己的制服上配帶在戰爭期間得到的所有勛章，每次大查房的時候，都會向學員查問他們是否知道這些勛章的名稱。所以，正副班主任已經把這些額外的個人資料告知所有同學，要大家細心記著，還要各人好好背頌向英女皇宣誓效忠的誓詞。
        一切人能力範圍可以做到的，在第一次大查房之前都做了！

       裁決的時刻終於到了，CDMI沒有向Q班同學查間自己的勛章名稱，但有要求一位同學背頌出誓詞。CDMI真的有配帶上白色手配，但沒有四處觸摸。當檢視完畢之後，他對隨行教官說出檢視結果，特別提及Q班的衛生間！
      自己當時真的在心裡打了一個冷顫！豈料，CDMI所提及的內容，竟然是讚賞！
      他對隨行教官說，他從前在大查房所看到的衛生間，都是被學員徹底的翻新過，他個人並不認同這樣的行為；警校的要求，是要學員保持清潔，衛生，不是要學員負責翻新工程；他看到Q班的衛生間地板，雖然出現了不均等的漂白情況，但卻可以看到這一班的學員不是以翻新的目標來處理衛生間，而是以盡力的清洗來對待這個地方，符合他心目中的“清潔原則”所以值得讚賞！
      Q班“逃過一劫了”

We were police we were young: 4 The circus of boots

 Once the student came into the PTS, they has being told a commandment about “the official drill ground” is “the Holy land”, it can not be entered unless has been allowed. Therefore, as passing through the surrounding area of the Holy land at the sun rising in the sky, all students have been instructed to keep quiet, don’t be staying at the area outside of the Holy land.

In every normally day after 5:00 p m, the main road of PTS must be opened for the all students, whether are the police students or the probationary inspectors, they will be changed their uniform to PT suit, goes to train their physical fitness by running on the main road of PTS. The main road of PTS is starting at the entrance of Wong Chuk Hang Estate, and has completed the direction of straight extension at the entrance of the Ocean Park. The others buildings and facilities of PTS, had been being built on the both sides of the main road of PTS. The official drill ground had set to the one side of the main road. It showed a rectangle space and match the sloped downward of the main road extended to the rear of the official drill ground, let it producing a solemn style.

Why people felt the solemn style from the official drill ground？

As the free time for the personal physical fitness training, somebody would be taken the bells while running on the main road to strengthen their arms; somebody would be respected for running, the others just relaxant walking on the main road, enjoying the view of the traces, its laying on the surface of the official drill ground, it had been formed by the friction from the students wearing the boots marching on the ground since 1970’s

The straight marching traces are the symbols of the students who had picked up the rifles with sweat marching on the ground for so many years. As staring the traces of the ground, you would be heard the sonorous voice. It was happened as the metal horseshoe impacted on the concrete, and let you to produce an admiration from your heart.

Although, it worthy to admire that the boots had been left these traces on the surface of the official drill ground, however, it also had been left some embarrassing memories to the students.

Because every single boot had been being nailed the horseshoe at the bottom, so, it have made noise as walking on the road, and let people to know somebody will be approaching even the hundred paces far away, that is the good thing for the all students, its let everyone to know they will be facing somebody and staying alert.

In theory, the police students are the lowest rank in PTS, they must have to salute to everyone; so, as they heard the sound of the horseshoe, must be prepared the post of saluting for who has the higher rank than they are, won’t have to get punishment for missing to give the salute to the staff and the instructor.

Because of wearing the boots nailed metal horseshoe, it would have easily fallen into the trap as walking on the smooth ground.

The floors and the stairs of the student quarter had been covered general tiles and mosaic tiles. Every day in the quarter should be happened something about somebody falling on the ground just like a juggling show. That is no mean nothing for everyone because they are accustomed to it, but also makes fun to each other.

However, if it has happened in front of the higher rank of the staff and the instructor, it is absolutely not funny.

The students saluting to the staff and the instructor, as they are not “saluting on marching” that they must be staying at the post of “stand and easy”; so, to take an attention post is necessary before they are going to give a salute to someone. First of all put the right foot to 90 degree and then vigorously tread on the floor; at that time, the two legs will be standing at attention and to the chief a salute by right hand.

So many times, the students will have gotten a slip as put the right foot to 90 degree and following a vigorously tread on the floor; if someone have lucky that just would have lost a little balance. However, a poor guy will be fallen on the floor. We can imagine the kind of situation.

I have still remembered once I need to return some document to headquarter of PTS by the order of class instructor. At that time, I have already been a senior student, no more to get nervous as encountered the staff and the instructor. The day at the headquarter of PTS, I had encountered a foreign Chief Inspector; he is walking down the stairs; so, I have prepared to give him a salute by a senior trainee. Surprisingly, the horseshoes which in the bottom of my boots have became an enemy against me. I have slipped while I have ready to put the right hand approaching to my cap, and my feet have showed a few steps of “Tap Dance”. Fortunately, I didn’t fell on the floor, because I am an agile guy.

At that moment, as the foreign Chief Inspector saw me had slipped and almost felt on the floor, I am surely seen him to try to help me with his hands.

Ultimately, I had to give a salute to the foreign Chief Inspector by a senior trainee with an awkward expression.

剛剛進入警校的學員，都會被告誡一件事情，就是警校的大操場是(聖地)不能隨便進入！所以每當太陽高照的時候經過大操場外圍地方，都被訓示要保持肅靜，不要逗留在外圍位置。

平常日子的下午五時過後，警校大道都會開放讓全校學員，不論是學警或受訓督察都會換上運動裝束在大道上跑步鍛鍊體能。這條警校大道是從警校的黃竹坑新村入口開始，以畢直的方向延伸到警校的另一邊海洋公園入口。警校內的不同建築大樓和設施，都是在這條警校大道兩則分別興建。大操場就是設置在警校大道旁邊，長方形大操場的空間感覺，配合警校大道以一度向下傾斜的坡度緊貼著大操場的後方，產生出一種莊嚴的氣氛。

     為何會有這種莊嚴氣氛！

     就在這個自由鍛鍊的時間，有些人會手持啞鈴一邊跑步，一邊加強臂力訓練；有些人就會專心跑步；另一些人就只是慢步散心；欣賞一下大操場上每一條由軍靴磨擦形成的痕跡！

     這些畢直的步操痕跡，是多年來不同學員頂著步槍，流著汗水一步一步在混凝土地面上踏出來的印記！留心看著這些步操痕跡，彷彿在耳中聽到軍靴底部的金屬馬蹄鐵撞擊在混凝土地面上發出的鏗鏘聲音，不自覺地就會在心中產生一份敬畏！

     軍靴雖然在大操場上留下了這種讓人心存敬畏的痕跡，但是也為每一位學員在警校的生活中留下一些尷尬的回憶！

     因為在軍靴底部釘上了金屬馬蹄鐵，所以在行走的時候，都會發出聲音，絕對可以在某人出現在面前數十呎之外便知道有人走近，這對於學警來說是一件好事；因為知道有人正在走近，可以提高警覺‧在警校內，學警是階級最低的，理論上是要向所有人敬禮，所以每當聽到馬蹄鐵的聲音，便會做好向上級敬禮的準備，不會因為一時忘記而被(問候)！

      但是穿上釘有金屬馬蹄鐵的軍靴，走在光滑的地板上，便是最容易滑倒的陷阱！

     學警宿舍的樓梯走廊地板，都舖上瓷磚和紙皮石，每天在宿舍內，都會發生人仰馬翻的雜技表演。這樣的情況，大家看慣了沒有甚麼大不了！還會互相取笑一下？

     但是，如果在較高級的教官面前滑倒，就絕對不是一件樂事！

     學警向長官敬禮，如果不是在“行進間敬禮”，而是在站立稍息的時刻，學警都需要先行做一個立正動作，就是用右腳提起九十度角之後用力踏地，此時兩腳便會合上立正，之後右手便給與長官一個敬禮。

     很多時候，學警都會因為用力過猛，在右腳提起九十度角之後用力踏地的剎那間滑倒‧幸運的便只是稍為失去一點平衡，倒霉的便會坐在地上！那種情境大家可以幻想一下！

     還記得自己曾經有一次要為班主任到警校行政大樓交還一些文件。那時候，自己已經是資深學員，不再有那種遇見長官的恐懼症。在行政大樓的樓梯上，遇見一名外籍總督察正想走下樓梯，於是便準備給他一個資深學員的敬禮，豈料馬蹄鐵選對了時間跟我作對頭人，正當自己的手準備貼近警帽的剎那間，自己失去了平衡，雙腳連續跳了幾下“剔撻舞”，幸好身手還敏捷，沒有坐在地上。

     當時，那名外籍總督察看到我快要滑倒坐在地上的時候，我看到他真的有伸雙出手想扶著我…！

     最後，我都以一個尷尬的表情配上一個資深學員的動作，向外籍總督察給了一個敬禮！

We were police we were young:3 Every policeman have a technique of shoe shinne

The lifestyle of PTS was basically according to the working hours; 8 hours per day. All students had to morning exercise by themselves in the small playground at 6 and a half every morning, and according to the order came into canteen for breakfast at 7:00, back to dormitory room to have a rest before 8:00, afterward, the daily training procedures started at 9:00, until finished class at 17:00. Arrival at canteen for dinner at 18:00; and we had a free time before 20:00. One hour mandatory self-study started at 20:00, it often to self-study about the law of Hong Kong and the ordinance of Police Force. The daily training procedures finished at 21:00; all students had done everything which they want to do till to the morning exercise of next day.

The second day in the PTS, two senior police students passing out two months later came to Q class to give some help; it was arranged by the deputy head teacher of Q class. At that time, there were so many personal equipment for police student to manage; for example, the siren rope, it was a one-third inch thick long black rope; how to use it to weave a style of hanging rope to coupling a siren. Honestly, no one to know how to do it in Q class.

At that time, Hong Kong was still a Royal Hong Kong Police Cadet School, the main reason for establishment this school was recruiter insufficient amount in 1970’s, there was not many people choosing to join the Police Force to regard as a lifelong career.

Why?

Because the bad reputation about the Royal Hong Kong Police Force.

Why the reputation about the Royal Hong Kong Police Force was bad?

Because of the Royal Hong Kong Police Force has seriously corruption between 1960’s and 1970’s.

Go to try to solve the problem of recruiter insufficient among, the Royal Hong Kong Police Force established the Royal Hong Kong Police Force Cadet School to give a chance to the teenage who has not interested to learn at school, let them try to apply to be a student of Police Cadet School. These students will be accepted for a teenage extremely harsh physical and discipline tr5aning. When they complete the training at Police Cadet School, they will be officially recruited as a police student by Police Department

The students came from Police Cadet School have had good physical training and experiment of marching, all of them will be got special care from deputy head teacher. On the other hand, their academic background were let them to have some trouble given to head teacher as they have started to study the Law of Hong Kong and the ordinance of Police Force.

It was only a prejudice in PTS. In reality, the two different kind of background of students were not any difference.

In the day of two senior students visited the dormitory of Q class, they solved the problem of Q class of the rope of siren, and demonstrated how to use the shoe polish it distributed by government to buff the marching boots and the uniform shoes, let them became shinning, and to make a magic to change the boot head of marching boots and the shoe head of uniform shoes from gloomy to reflect the teeth slit.

Actually, boots are the necessary equipment for the student living in PTS. In these days, when the student step outside of the dormitory moving in the area of the school, in addition to wearing boots, they can only wear black sport shoes. Therefore, students being moving outside from dormitory, the boots head is bright or not, the focus usually is. There is why all the students more or less will be shoe expert, each one have had secret method to make their shoe head became shinning.

My secret method was receipted from the other senior student inheritance; be equipped with a small bottle of petrol, a worn-out cotton quality T-shirt, a little water, a lighter and a forefinger.

If you want to survive well, not to attract an unnecessary (greeting), this is a very important skill of lifestyle in PTS, you have to learn and practice in seriously. Originally, PTS has had provided this service by handyman, they can spend tens of dollars per month to manage the shoes-head. Unfortunately, it was not allowed from deputy head teacher, the students of Q class need to do it by themselves in the first two months; two months later, if they have still been staying at PTS, they will be allowed to find someone else to help.

Therefore, the first days after finish the daily training, everybody staying at dormitory to take care of their boots and shoes heads, and have a competition to each other to see whom the boots and shoes heads are brighter than the other ones.

My secret method was a refined products through the slowly production process. Every time to rub the shoe polish on the shoe head with thin layer, after that, use the heat of lighter let the shoe polish sticking on the shoe head smoothly, and then to rub the shoe polish on the shoe head again and again, until to make sure that is enough, then, use a piece of cloth cut down from a worn-out T-shirt to stain a little water, to warp a forefinger, rotating to  grind on the shoe head lightly. If the shoe polish on the shoe head is smooth enough, after a few polished with water, there will be able to illuminate the teeth slit effect.

學堂的生活作息，都是以一天八小時工作為基礎。每天早上六時半全校學員都需要到小操場上自行早操。七時後便依次序到飯堂進食早餐，大約八時之前便回到宿舍休息一會兒，到九時便開始一天的受訓過程，到下午五時便放學。六時半便到飯堂用膳，之後到晚上八時之前都是自由時間。晚上八時便是一小時的強制自修課堂，通常都是自修香港法例和警察條例。到晚上九時便是休息時間一直到翌日早上的早操時段。

在學堂的第二天，副班主任安排了還有兩個月便畢業的師兄來到宿舍幫忙。當時的軍裝學員，有很多個人裝備需要整理；例如銀笛繩，一條長長的黑色三分之一吋厚粗繩，如何把它結成為一條掛著銀笛的花式結繩！坦白說，全班二十人沒有一個人知道！

當時，香港還有少年警察訓練學校，成立的主要原因，就是從七十年代開始，皇家香港警察的招募成績一直都不理想，並不是有太多人願意以警察作為職業。

為何？
因為名聲不好！
為何名聲不好？
因為有貪污！
所以皇家香港警察為了解決招募人手的問題！便成立了少年警察訓練學校，讓當時沒有讀書興趣的少年，有初中學歷便可以投考少年警察訓練學校。這些少年學員在訓練學校中會接受對於少年人來說極為嚴苛的體能和紀律訓練。到他們完成訓練之後，便會得到警務署招聘為正式的警察學員。這批出身少警的學員，個人體能和步操能力都很好，通常都會特別得到副班主任的喜愛，但因為他們的學歷背景，對於修讀香港法例和警察條例便會對正班主任有一定的困擾。
這只是在學堂內的傳統成見，現實情況下，兩種不同背景的學員其實並沒有太大分別！
就在師兄到訪宿舍當天，他們解決了Q班二十名學員的銀笛繩問題，還示範了如何使用政府分發的鞋油把全新的步操軍靴和軍裝皮鞋的表面擦得發亮，同時更可以讓軍靴和皮鞋的鞋頭位置的光亮程度達到可以倒照出牙齒的隙縫！
其實，軍靴是每名學員每天在學堂行動的裝備。那時候，當學員踏出宿舍，在警校範圍內活動，除了穿上軍靴，便只能夠穿著黑色運動布鞋(黑飯魚)
所以，在外出走動的時候，軍靴鞋頭是否光亮，通常都會是焦點所在！故此，每一名警察學員，或多或少都會是擦鞋專家，各自都擁有獨門手法讓鞋頭發亮！
我的獨門手法，都是承傳於其他兄師；要配備一小瓶電油、穿舊了的綿質汗衣、小許清水、一個打火機和一隻食指！
因為這是學堂生活中一件十分重要的技能，要生存得好，不招徠無謂的(問候)，便要苦心學習和實踐。本來，學堂內是有專門提供這類服務的雜工可以幫忙，只要每月花數十元便可以。但是，當時的副班主任並不容許，要Q班的學員在首兩個月內要自行處理自己的鞋頭；兩個月後，如果仍然留在警校，便可以找別人幫忙。所以，最初的日子，每天下課之後，大家都留在宿舍好好照顧自己的鞋頭，互相比試鞋頭的光亮程度。
自己的獨門技術，就是慢工出細貨。每一次為鞋頭上鞋油都是薄薄的一層，之後用打火機熱力讓鞋油平滑地依附在鞋頭表面；之後再一次上鞋油，重複多次這套動作。當認為鞋頭上的鞋油足夠了，便用一片汗衣碎布包著食指，沾一點清水，在鞋頭上輕輕旋轉打磨。如果，鞋頭上的鞋油平滑程度高，再經過幾次水打磨，便會出現可以倒照出牙齒隙縫的效果！
