The standard of inspection of
the hostel
Circumstance would be changed
the values of life for the teenagers directly.
As the values of life has been
changed, that would be influenced the style of living in later life.
The Q class had been assigned
to the first floor of the hostel as they came into PTS in first day; before
this arrangement, the last class which lived there had been left this hostel for
two months ago. Although, wasn’t any scene of horror displayed in front of the
eyes, but its have enough problems to the students of Q class to consume their
efforts to restore them from the mess, as without any cleaning operation in the
hostel for two months ago.
In 1985, all student hostels
in PTS were the horizontal four-storey buildings. Every floor had the same
building specifications; living room, toilet and storage room had been placed
at the right side of the ladder; this storage room will be located the rifles
of each student will be assigned for marching in the future.
The teaching room had been placed at the left side of the ladder. The
first day move in the hostel, all of the furniture of the teaching room had
been being placed at the living room; the living had had a pair of doors with
glasses could be locked, and the inside of the living room had been separated
by three brick walls let its became to three equally areas, each area had been
located two rows of iron beds and wooden lockers ; “18”and the other five students had assigned to the
third area (rear room).
At that time, the basic equipment
of the police student had one-pair of marching boots, one-pair of uniform
shoes, one police cap, one riot helmet, three-pair of socks, one-pair of wool
gloves, two-pair of uniform numbered metal plates, one set of leather belt and
chest belt, one leather baton cover, one wooden baton, one set of siren and
siren rope, one pistol rope, one leather pistol cover, one leather handcuffs
cover, one World War II style of gas mask, three light-green shorts with three
short sleeve shirt of PTS uniform, one white cloth with metal buckle belt, (in
summer, male student do not wear a shirt, but female student must wear a shirt
with a light-green trousers); two dark blue trousers of winter uniform, one
dark blue sweater, one wrist strap with uniform number, two set of formal summer
uniform of police, one set of formal winter uniform of police, (all the formal
uniform of police had had a name of “full dress”, its won’t be wear in ordinary
day); one blanket, it used to cover on the iron bed with plank,(in summer, this
blanket will still to cover on the iron bed with plank); one set of textbook;
an applicable law of the police and an ordinances of police.(its could be used
to instead a pair of pillows). Every time as the large inspection, all the
personal equipments must be showing on the bed with the official specification
of each course, and the every personal equipments must be printed a UI number.
All the students of rear room including me had being appointed to
responsible for the duty of cleaning of toilet and bathroom. Once I heard that
it let me to have a little despair.
At that time, the toilet and bathroom of the male hostel had had four
floor-mount urinals; four independent interval water closet, toilets; four
shower rooms; four wash basins, and had one floor-mount water storage heater
but it had been broken.
The four floor-mount urinals each one had a copper filter, every time as
inspections these copper filters must be polished with luster. So, the vice-class
instructor ordered the students used metal polish cream to buff the copper filter,
and keep its in secret place; use plastic replacement in ordinary days.
Without any cleaning operation in two months, it must need to contribute
much more efforts to let them to be in line with the standard of inspection. Toilet
cleaner, thinner, acid and sand power, they were the first choices to against
the dirty stain.
The dirty stain cover on the mosaic tiles in toilet and bathroom can be
said to achieve the fossil stage; scouring pad and wire brush were useless; be sure
to use strong acid. However, Q class was found that no enough strong acid to
manage the whole areas of mosaic tiles of toilet and bathroom in the eve of the
inspection day. The result was revealed a seriously unequal breaching colour.
The two class instructors have seen these ominous patterns but it was to
later to fix it.
In legend, the senior officer who would be in charge of inspection, might
be worn a pair of white gloves goes to touch everywhere in the hostel. He will
touch the backboard of the classroom, and the inside of the student drawer; he
will be swept the glass of windows by his hands.
They are so metamorphosis. That was my first reaction as I heard this
legend; and it would be raised with their ranking became higher and higher.
The day of the first
inspection was on the second weekend after we came into PTS. We have done our
best used the limited sources that we had gotten before dawn. Every corner has thoroughly cleaned
by several times. In order to let the glass of windows can be transparent a
crystal effect, everyone of Q class goes to risk their lives climbed out of the
hostel from the windows to clean the windows, canopies and beams. Using toothbrush goes to clean the ladders, and the mosaic tiles of corridor.
Because of the students used shoe shine polish to buff their boots every day, it
left a lot of traces of black shoe polish on the floor, it needs to use thinner
with scouring pad to brush them out. Using an adhesive tape goes to catch the
dust which remains on the floor.
After dawn, finished
breakfast, carry out a final preventive inspection when returned to hostel. Everybody
have worn the formal summer uniform of police, checking each other’s appearance
with each other; moustache and bread have scraped or not; there is not any nose
hair came out from nostril. Finally, we used an adhesive tape to clean up dust
and dirt which has still been sticking on the uniforms. At that moment, I think
I was nearly became sterile stage.
That time, the in charge of
inspection was the senior officer; he had a job title CDMI. He was an
Englishman, the rank was Chief Inspector, and had fought in Second World War.
In legend, he was liked to wear all the metals which received during the war,
whenever the inspection many students would be asked what the names of the
metals. So, the students of Q class had already been told this additional
personal information by the instructors, needed to remember carefully, but also
a good recite the pledge of allegiance to the Queen.
In the eve of the first
inspection, everything human beings can do has already been done.
The moment of judgment has
finally come. No any question about the name of the metals from CDMI asked to
the students, but he has asked the students to recite the pledge of allegiance
to the Queen, and he has worn a pair of white gloves, but didn’t goes to touch
anywhere.
After the inspection, he told
the result of the inspection to the accompanying instructors, he especially
mentioned to the toilet and bathroom of Q class.
At that time, I had a trembling
with fear from the inside of my heart. I didn’t think of a dramatic result will
emerge in front of my eyes; unexpectedly we got a appreciation
CDMI told to the accompanying
instructors, he didn’t accept the students went to renovation their toilet and
bathroom that he had seen before; the request of PTS just keeping the
facilities be clean. Although, he has seen the floor of toilet and bathroom of
Q class has revealed some different colours by using the bleach, this can let
him to know the students of Q class didn’t see the renovation as the goal, but
to try to clean to treat this place, this is in line with his principles, so,
it’s worthy to have an appreciation.
Q class has escaped a
catastrophe.
對於一個年輕小伙子來說，生活環境的氣氛會直接改變年輕人的價值觀！價值觀一旦改變，往後的生活都會受其影響！
第一天入住警校宿舍的時候，Q班所分配到的樓層是在一樓。這個樓層距離上一次畢業班別遷出的日子已經有兩個月的時間。兩個月沒有人清潔的宿舍，雖然說不上恐佈，但也有足夠多的問題讓新住客消耗大量心力去復原！
一九八五年的警校學警宿舍，全都是一字型的四層建築，每一層都是劃一規格，樓梯右邊是宿舍、衛生間和一個儲物室。那個儲物室將來是用作擺放每一位學員所分配到的步操長槍。樓梯的左邊是教室。第一天入住宿舍的時候，教室內的枱椅全都被搬進了宿舍內；宿舍有一度可以上鎖的玻璃木門，內裡以磚牆平均分隔出三個區域，每一個區域都擺放了兩排鐵架床；自己和其他五位學警被分配到第三區域(尾房)。
那時候的學警基本個人裝備，有步操軍靴一對、軍裝皮鞋一對、警帽一頂、防暴鋼盔一頂、警襪三對、毛冷手套一對、個人金屬編號兩套共四個、一套真皮腰帶和胸帶(俗稱天地線)、一個真皮警棍套、警棍一支(木製)、警笛連警笛繩、警槍套繩、真皮警槍套、真皮手銬套、一個第二次世界大戰時期款式的防毒面具、警校制服淺綠色短褲三條、上衣三件、白色布扣腰帶一條(夏天男學警是不穿上衣的，女學警當然會多穿上一件上穿，配合一條長褲！)、冬天校服長褲兩條、毛衣一件、一個扣上個人編號的手腕帶、兩套夏季的警察制服、一套冬天制服(這些制服在警校內是被稱為大禮服，一般日子是不會穿著的)、一張舖在鐵架木板床上的毛毯(夏天都要把這張毛毯舖在木板床上)、一套適用於警察的法律和警察條例課本(厚度可以當作兩個枕頭)。這些基本個人配備在每一次(大查房)的時候，都要全部以個別班級的劃一規格展示在學警的床舖上。每一樣個人裝備都要用印章蓋上自己的警察編號。
18分配入住的尾房被安排負責清潔衛生間，知道這毎個消息之後，有點不是味兒！
當時的男學警衛生間，有四個直立到地的小便廁格和四格獨立間隔的坐廁(應該沒有記錯)、有四格獨立的沐浴間、洗手瓷盤也有四個，還有一個壞掉了的大型坐地式熱水爐。
四個直立的小便廁格有四個銅造的尿格，每次大查房的時候，這些尿格都要發出金黃色的光澤。所以副班主任便叮囑尾房的學員要收起這四個尿格，使用(擦銅膏)把尿格擦亮，平日便以塑膠代用品取代。
兩個月沒有清潔的衛生間當然要花上很大的努力才可以符合大查房的要求，所以(潔廁得、天拿水、鏹水、沙粉)便成為了對抗頑劣污積的必然之選。
當時，衛生間的紙皮石地板上的污積，可以說是達到「化石」階段，百潔布、鋼絲刷已經失去作用，一定要使用強力鏹水。但是當Q班接受第一次的大查房前夕，預備的強力鏹水並不足夠應付整個衛生間的地板。結果，就是出現了不均等的漂白情況，事態十分嚴重！
正副班主任都看到這種不均等的漂白圖案，但已經沒有時間去補救了！
傳說，負責大查房的高級教官，是會配帶上白色手套來觸摸學警宿舍的每一個角落！他會觸摸課室黑板和學員使用的書桌抽屜內格，也會用手掃過窗台和玻璃。當時，自己聽到這個傳說的時候，第一個反應，就是感覺到官階越高便越變態！
那天，是自己進入學堂的第二個星期。同班學員在天亮之前盡了全力和所有可供應用的物資，把舍宿的每一個角落都徹底清潔過多次，為了讓玻璃門窗可以通透晶瑩，全班同學都冒著生命危險爬出一樓建築物外牆，清潔簷篷橫樑和外露窗台；樓梯和走廊的瓷磚與紙皮石便用牙刷逐一擦拭；因為學警的軍靴每天都要使用鞋油擦出光亮，所以宿舍的地板經常都會留下大量黑色鞋油條紋，需要使用天拿水來除抺這些痕跡。使用(牛皮膠紙)捕足飄浮在地上的微塵。
天亮之後，吃過早餐，回到宿舍進行了最後一次的預防檢查，各人穿好了大禮服之後，互相檢查一下對方的外觀，鬍鬚有沒有剃淨，鼻毛有沒有外露。最後，便用牛皮膠紙互相清除一下身上的塵埃。到了這一刻，自己認為已經近乎達到(無菌)的階段！
負責這次大查房的高級教官職位簡稱是(CDMI)中文譯名應該是(操場總教官)，是一位打過第二次世界大戰的英國人，當時的職級是總督察。傳說，他喜歡在自己的制服上配帶在戰爭期間得到的所有勛章，每次大查房的時候，都會向學員查問他們是否知道這些勛章的名稱。所以，正副班主任已經把這些額外的個人資料告知所有同學，要大家細心記著，還要各人好好背頌向英女皇宣誓效忠的誓詞。
一切人能力範圍可以做到的，在第一次大查房之前都做了！
裁決的時刻終於到了，CDMI沒有向Q班同學查間自己的勛章名稱，但有要求一位同學背頌出誓詞。CDMI真的有配帶上白色手配，但沒有四處觸摸。當檢視完畢之後，他對隨行教官說出檢視結果，特別提及Q班的衛生間！
自己當時真的在心裡打了一個冷顫！豈料，CDMI所提及的內容，竟然是讚賞！
他對隨行教官說，他從前在大查房所看到的衛生間，都是被學員徹底的翻新過，他個人並不認同這樣的行為；警校的要求，是要學員保持清潔，衛生，不是要學員負責翻新工程；他看到Q班的衛生間地板，雖然出現了不均等的漂白情況，但卻可以看到這一班的學員不是以翻新的目標來處理衛生間，而是以盡力的清洗來對待這個地方，符合他心目中的“清潔原則”所以值得讚賞！
Q班“逃過一劫了”
